5 expensive car repairs that could leave you without a vehicle

Most of us don't spend much time thinking about what we'd do if our car or van were suddenly taken off the road - and why would we? Your vehicle is one of those things you barely give a second thought to. You expect it to be there when you need it, ready for the commute, the school run, or the weekly shop. It's only when something goes wrong that you realise how much of your daily routine depends on it.

At Intack Self Drive, we speak to people in this exact situation all the time. Some are dealing with an unexpected breakdown. Others are waiting for parts to arrive. Some are caught in the middle of insurance claims that seem to be moving at a snail's pace. Whatever the reason, they're all facing the same problem: life doesn't stop just because your car has.

So, with that in mind and in the interest of being prepared, here are five of the most expensive vehicle repairs drivers commonly face, why they can leave you without a car or van for weeks at a time, and how we're here to help with daily hire and flexi hire while your vehicle is off the road.

Engine failure

If there's one repair that makes most drivers instantly wince, it's engine failure. Modern engines are incredibly sophisticated pieces of engineering, packed with sensors, electronics and components that all need to work together perfectly and when something goes seriously wrong, fixing it is rarely easy. Depending on the fault, your garage may need to strip the engine down, replace major components, source specialist parts, or fit an entirely new engine - and that’s if it’s even worth keeping the car on the road.

If fixing the engine is the way forward for your vehicle, the cost can be eye-watering. That said, it's often a more hidden inconvenience that catches people out, and that's how long engine repairs can actually take. They don't typically come with neat timelines. Parts might need to be ordered, further damage may be discovered once work begins, or specialist components may need sourcing. Before you know it, a repair you expected to take a few days has turned into several weeks.

That's usually the point where the repair bill stops being the biggest issue. The real problem becomes figuring out how you're supposed to get on with everyday life while your car sits in a workshop.

Gearbox failure

The difficulty with gearbox faults is that they often start small. A slightly delayed gear change. A strange noise when accelerating. A warning light that appears every now and then - little things you can almost put to the back of your mind on the day-to-day. Unfortunately, those small issues can quickly develop into major repairs.

One of the reasons gearbox repairs are so expensive is the amount of labour involved before the actual repair even begins. Gearboxes are usually buried deep within a vehicle, so simply removing and refitting the unit can take anywhere from 5 to 12 hours of labour, depending on the make and model. That's before a mechanic has even started investigating what's gone wrong inside.

If the fault lies within the gearbox itself, things become even more complicated. Internal components like gears, bearings and clutch packs often require the entire transmission to be dismantled and rebuilt. This isn't the sort of work every garage can carry out, either. It requires specialist knowledge, specialist tools and a lot of time. As a result, gearbox repairs often end up being among the most expensive mechanical bills you can get, and they can actually end up writing your car off.

Head gasket failure

Few phrases strike fear into the heart of drivers quite like "head gasket failure". It's one of those parts that most people have never even seen, and if you did see one, you'd probably wonder what all the fuss was about. It's relatively small and doesn't look particularly impressive. The problem is that it does the incredibly important job of maintaining engine compression and keeping oil and coolant where they're supposed to be. Once it fails, things can start getting expensive very quickly.

If coolant and oil start mixing, or the engine begins overheating, it can lead to severe engine damage, and other components can be affected too. Before long, what started as a single repair can snowball into a much bigger and far more expensive job.

Part of the frustration with this repair usually comes from the uncertainty it brings. Until the engine is dismantled, garages can't always see the full extent of the damage, and that in itself is a time-consuming and often expensive process. On top of that, additional issues are often uncovered once work begins, which can push both the cost and the timescale up even further.

Then there's the completely separate issue of figuring out how you're supposed to manage without a vehicle. You might be told one thing on Monday and something completely different by Friday. What was originally expected to take a few days can quickly turn into a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, you're still expected to get to work, keep appointments, do the school run, and get on with everything else life throws at you.

Turbocharger replacement

Unless you've had one fail before, there's a good chance you've never thought much about your vehicle's turbocharger. They're brilliant when they're working properly, and less brilliant when they aren't.

A failing turbo can cause a range of problems, from reduced performance and excessive smoke to complete power loss. Unfortunately, turbo failures aren't always isolated incidents either. In some cases, underlying lubrication issues or engine problems may have contributed to the failure in the first place.

That's where things can become convoluted, and you guessed it, expensive. Again, a repair that initially seemed relatively straightforward can suddenly involve further investigations, additional parts and extra labour. Before long, your vehicle has been off the road for far longer than anyone originally expected.

One of the most common things we hear from customers is that they didn't realise how long repairs could take. It's easy to look at the repair itself and assume that'll be the biggest hurdle. In reality, the repair is often only part of the process. You need to find a mechanic who can actually do the work, hope they've got space to fit you in, wait for parts to arrive and then wait for the repair itself to be completed.

Clutch replacement

Compared to engine and gearbox failures, a clutch replacement might sound relatively non-threatening. You might even take a breath. But the reality is that it can still cause notable trouble, especially with older vehicles. Again, this is one of those repairs where even accessing the clutch often involves removing major drivetrain components, making the repair labour-intensive.

Plus, in many cases, a clutch replacement arrives alongside other age-related issues. Your car might already have suspension wear, advisory notices from previous MOTs, or rising maintenance costs. Then, the clutch simply becomes the latest item on a growing list.

Even when the repair itself is uncomplicated, you're still left without transport while the work is carried out, and that can be frustrating if you rely on your car every day and public transport isn't practical, available or, let's face it, reliable. Then, the repair bill isn't the only pressing issue. Now you also have to figure out how you're going to get to work, do the school run and carry on with everyday life while your vehicle is off the road.

The repair is only half the problem

When people think about major vehicle repairs, they usually focus on the cost, and that's understandable. Nobody enjoys receiving a bill with four figures on it. What often gets overlooked is everything that comes with it. The disruption to your routine, the time spent arranging alternative transport, the inconvenience of being without your vehicle, and the extra costs that can start creeping in while it's off the road.

Life carries on regardless of what's happening in the workshop. You still need to get to work, your children still need dropping off and picking up from school, businesses still need to be run, and family commitments don't just disappear because your vehicle is waiting for parts.

In our experience, that's often what catches people out. It’s a lot to get your head around when you're already trying to deal with the original problem. The good news is that while your vehicle is off the road, you don't have to put the rest of your life on hold.

Luckily, that’s where we come in!

Keeping you moving while your vehicle is off the road

At Intack Self Drive, we're here to make sure a major repair, or even a write-off, doesn't bring your life to a standstill.

If your car is only going to be off the road for a few days, but those are a few days you simply can't be without a vehicle, our daily hire service can keep you moving until your own car is ready for collection. Better still, we're flexible. Daily hire is charged on a day-by-day basis for up to 28 days, so if your repair takes a little longer than expected, you can simply extend the hire period. If you bring the vehicle back earlier than planned, we'll refund any unused days, no questions asked!

If repairs are dragging on, you're waiting for a replacement vehicle, or you're still deciding what to do after a write-off, our flexi hire service offers a longer-term solution without the commitment of a traditional lease. You can keep one of our expertly maintained vehicles for as long as you need it and return it whenever you're ready. Whether that's a few weeks or a few months is entirely up to you.
