Here are the essentials to bear in mind to remember when hiring a van

If you’re thinking of taking advantage of our fantastic van hire, car hire or minibus hire services this summer, you’ll need to keep a few things in mind to save you time during the application process. Here at Intack Self Drive, we make it as easy as possible for you to hire a vehicle.

There are a variety of reasons why you might require a hire vehicle from us - so whether you’re in need of some temporary work transport, a car for a road trip, or a van with plenty of space to help you move house, here’s our quick guide on a few of the major points you need to know to hire a van with us.

How old do I need to be to hire a vehicle?

When renting any of our cars and vans, you’ll need to provide evidence that you’re 25 years old, or over, with at least 12 months driving experience. The only exception to this rule is large cars, which require the driver to be over 30 years of age. Our maximum age limit for renting a vehicle with us is 75, however if you are over 75 you can call and speak to the reservations team, and we can approach our insurers for clearance in certain circumstances.

If you’re looking to rent a minibuses, you’ll need to be over 25 years old with 2 years of driving experience. For 12 and 17 seater minibuses, you’ll need to have passed your driving test before January 1997, or have a D1 entitlement on your driving licence.

What documents do I require?

Before hiring a car from us, you’ll need to make sure that you’re in possession of a valid photocard licence. If not, you’ll need to display your old paper licence, and you’ll also need a valid photo ID (i.e. a passport or other photo ID) for confirmation, as well as a valid credit or debit card.

You’ll also need to supply us with proof of your address, dated within the last three months. If you’re a new customer, you’ll need to bring your driving licence and two recent examples of proof of address, which are dated from the last three months. We accept documents like bank/credit card statement, utility/phone bill as proof of address.

Returning customers who haven't hired for more than three months (and still reside at the same address) need to bring 1 proof of address, as well as their driving licence. If you have moved house since you last hired from us, you will need to bring two proofs of address.

Will I require insurance to hire a vehicle?

All of our rental cars come with a level of insurance (they have to by law!) This insurance usually takes the form of third party cover, and you’ll also be given the option to purchase a Collision Damage Waiver, which lowers your deposit. However, we do offer extra incentives if you use your own insurance, including a 20% discount on your hire vehicle.

Side note - even though your rental can be covered by your own fully compre­­­hen­­­sive insurance, it’s worth checking to see if this applies to you, as most personal policies will not cover hire vehicles.
