Silverstone partners with Intack Medical Support to strengthen tracksi
At Intack Self Drive we have more than 50 years of experience with providing market-leading car hire, van hire and flexi hire services to private customers and business customers alike – as you may know if you’ve ever hired a vehicle from us! Our expertise has also enabled us to launch an additional service supplying specialist medical vehicles under our Intack Medical Support brand – something we’ve recently talked about on the blog.
This year, we supplied two full electric HDU vehicles to the on-site medical team at Silverstone race circuit, and if you’ve been watching any of the racing coverage this season, there’s every chance you’ll have seen them in action! Silverstone is obviously in heavy rotation at the moment because of the races, with a packed calendar of major international events. That means medical response infrastructure needs to be fully operational at all times. These vehicles are now a permanent fixture trackside – let’s tell you a bit more about how they fit in, starting with what exactly our HDUs are.
What are our High Dependency Units?
Our High Dependency Units are one of the most popular units amongst our medical fleet – they’re typically used to support urgent and high-dependency medical care, and they meet the same operational and clinical standards as traditional blue light ambulances. These vehicles are purpose-built from the ground up for transporting critically ill or injured patients, fully configured for clinical use from the outset.
Each one is based on the Renault Master platform, giving the vehicle long-term durability, a comfortable working space, and the flexibility needed for specialist fitouts. We’ve designed the cab with long shifts in mind, including all-around CCTV to help with situational awareness and safety. Inside the rear bay, we’ve installed a range of well-placed cabinetry units for rapid access to equipment, along with side access stowage compartments to increase capacity without creating clutter.
There’s a manual rear access ramp to make loading and unloading safer and quicker, and the rear control panel allows staff to operate the onboard systems directly. These vehicles are available for short-term hire, long-term lease, or outright purchase – and we can tailor the configuration depending on the needs of the organisation. Indeed, that’s exactly what we’ve done for Silverstone.
How is Silverstone benefitting from our HDUs?
We’ve supplied two fully electric HDUs to Silverstone on a five-year lease. As we’ve already touched on above, they’ve been customised to the circuit’s specifications – including additional clinical waste bins and provisions for specific medical equipment. That means they’re fully aligned with the operational layout Silverstone’s medical team already use.
Both vehicles operated by Silverstone’s own medical personnel and are now based on the track full time, which means they won’t be used for any operations between sites, out on public roads. That gives the team permanent access to a vehicle setup they’re familiar with, which is especially important in time-sensitive or high-pressure situations. The track already has its own high-tech medical centre, and the HDUs slot in as an extension of that facility. Silverstone is required to maintain a minimum level of medical equipment, staffing, and infrastructure during every event, and our HDUs play a role in helping them meet those requirements.
Having them on a long-term lease also gives Silverstone the continuity and operational reliability they need at this level. The medical team knows what to expect from the vehicles, how to navigate the layout, and how the systems respond. It’s all an excellent illustration of exactly how we support complex, high-pressure environments with tailored long-term vehicle solutions.
That’s all the essentials covered – you may well spot them on your screens as the race season progresses!
