Fancy a Fright? 5 Spooky UK Halloween Destinations

Halloween plans have a habit of following the same routine. A few decorations, a scary film, maybe a night out somewhere nearby, depending on who’s going and how everyone’s getting home. Before you know it, you’re choosing between the places you can reach in a taxi rather than the ones you’d really like to visit.

But with Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, it’s the perfect excuse to do something a bit different. Head off on Friday, spend Saturday getting suitably spooked, and leave Sunday for a leisurely journey home. It would be a shame to let a whole Halloween weekend pass without making the most of it!

With our daily hire service, you’ve got more freedom to go where the ghost stories take you. Whether it’s a coastal break for two or a weekend away with your bravest friends, having the right vehicle means your plans can stretch beyond your nearest town or the last train home.

If you haven’t decided where to go yet, fear not, we’ve pulled together five of the very best places across the UK for a Halloween worth travelling for.

From vampire country to haunted underground vaults, there’s plenty here to get your imagination going…

1. Derry–Londonderry: a whole city getting into the spirit

If you’re up for travelling a little further afield this Halloween, why not head somewhere that really goes all out? Known as Europe’s largest Halloween festival, Derry brings the entire city to life — and we mean that quite literally! Its historic walls and streets become a backdrop for performances, ghostly encounters and spectacular costumes, with something happening around every corner.

And there’s good reason they take it so seriously. Halloween has its roots in Samhain, the ancient festival marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, when the spirits of the dead were believed to return to visit their homes. Derry proudly carries that tradition forward, giving those ancient stories a celebration worthy of their spooky beginnings.

The Awakening the Walled City trail brings myth and mischief into the streets, while performances and activities give families, couples and groups of friends plenty to explore. Whether you’re taking the kids to enjoy the spectacle or turning up with your mates in full costume, this is somewhere you can properly throw yourself into Halloween. It all builds towards the main parade and fireworks finale, with hundreds of local performers helping make the night something special.

And yes, you can make a road trip of it! Travelling from Great Britain involves a ferry crossing, but treat that as part of the adventure and you’ve got a Halloween getaway that starts before you even reach Derry. Pack your costumes, plan a few stops along the way, and enjoy the change of scenery. Just speak to our team about taking your hire vehicle on the ferry before booking your crossing, then get ready for a proper Halloween adventure. They don’t come much bigger than this!

2. Whitby: spend Halloween in Dracula’s territory!

A ruined abbey towering above the sea, a windswept graveyard and old streets winding down towards the harbour… Whitby could hardly look more ready for Halloween if it tried. And once you know its connection to the world’s most famous vampire, that climb up the church steps starts to feel a little different!

Bram Stoker visited Whitby in 1890, and the town helped shape Dracula. Its dramatic surroundings inspired scenes in the novel, while a visit to the local library gave him the name of his infamous Count. Even the vampire’s arrival has a connection to real events: the wreck of the Russian ship Dmitry inspired the fictional Demeter, which reaches Whitby with its dead captain tied to the wheel. A huge dog then leaps ashore and races up the 199 steps towards St Mary’s Church. Follow that route yourself, and you’re walking straight into one of gothic fiction’s most memorable settings.

There’s more lurking in Whitby’s folklore, too. Local legends tell of St Hild turning snakes to stone and lost abbey bells still ringing beneath the waves. Between the sea, the old churchyard and those towering ruins, you’ve got plenty to fire up your imagination before the evening’s even begun.

Then there’s the autumn Goth Weekend, bringing dramatic outfits, alternative markets and music to town. It’s a brilliant excuse to dress up, explore and make a whole weekend of it, whether you’re travelling as a couple or bringing friends along for the fun. Pack the car with your overnight bags, warm layers and your finest vampire cape, and head for the coast!

3. York: brave Europe’s most haunted city

If you’re looking for somewhere with enough ghost stories to fill an entire weekend, York should do nicely. Often billed as “the most haunted city in Europe,” it has more than 500 reported hauntings within its ancient walls, according to Visit York. That’s quite a few potential encounters to squeeze in between your evening meal and getting back to your hotel!

One of its most famous tales comes from Treasurer’s House, where apprentice heating engineer Harry Martindale reported an extraordinary sight while working in the cellar in 1953. First came the sound of a trumpet. Then Roman soldiers appeared through a solid wall, marched across the room and disappeared through another. Their legs were supposedly hidden below the knees, as though they were following the Roman road beneath the modern floor. You can imagine how quickly the boiler installation slipped down his list of priorities.

And the stories keep coming. The Golden Fleece is said to have a mischievous Victorian boy among its ghostly residents, while tales from Ye Olde Starre Inne describe phantom black cats that vanish when someone tries to stroke them. Even stopping for a bite to eat comes with a bit of local lore.

That’s what makes York such a good Halloween getaway. Book an evening ghost walk, explore its narrow lanes and old buildings, then find somewhere cosy to compare stories and decide who’s actually brave enough for another tour. There’s plenty for couples, friends or families to build a weekend around, depending on how spooky you want things to get. Sort your hire car, drive over and park up — once you’re exploring on foot, you’ll want time to see what’s around the next corner.

4. Edinburgh: head beneath the streets for a proper fright

Edinburgh knows how to set the scene for Halloween. Narrow closes, old graveyards and historic buildings give you plenty to explore above ground, but some of its most unsettling stories are waiting beneath your feet. If you fancy a weekend of ghost tales and dark history, this is somewhere you can really get stuck in.

Start with Greyfriars Kirkyard, home to the Black Mausoleum of Sir George Mackenzie, whose history is tied to the persecution of the Covenanters in the seventeenth century. Ghost lore links him to the Mackenzie Poltergeist, an allegedly hostile presence said to haunt the graveyard. Hear that story among the old tombs as the daylight fades, and you might find yourself staying a little closer to the rest of the group.

Some of Edinburgh’s real history is just as chilling. Burke and Hare murdered people and sold their bodies to anatomist Dr Robert Knox, with Burke’s own skeleton becoming an anatomical specimen after his execution. Beneath the Royal Mile, Mary King’s Close preserves historic streets and rooms where guides recount stories of plague and life in the old city. The Blair Street Vaults offer another atmospheric setting for ghost storytelling, taking you underground for an evening that should give everyone plenty to talk about afterwards.

Make a weekend of it and give yourself time for both the scares and the sightseeing. Travel up with friends, plan a spooky break for two, or choose tours that suit your family’s appetite for a fright. Having the right hire vehicle means room for the bags, the costumes and those extra layers you’ll be glad you brought. Get settled, head out and let Edinburgh’s storytellers take it from there!

5. Thorpe Park: find out who’s really the brave one!

Every group has someone who says nothing scares them. A Halloween trip to Thorpe Park could be the perfect chance to put that to the test! Fright Nights brings scare mazes, roaming characters and rollercoasters after dark together for an outing that keeps the adrenaline going well into the evening.

For 2026, Tenement takes you into an abandoned residential building where the power has failed, the tenants have vanished and something is getting closer. Your group shares a failing handheld light as reflections, illusions and sensory scares make it harder to trust what you’re seeing. Still happy to go first? We thought that might change things.

There’s plenty more waiting elsewhere. Stitches takes you inside Howell’s Toy Emporium, where visitors risk becoming part of a sinister collection, while Trailers builds its scares around a fictional cinema. In Purgatory Town, condemned inhabitants have their own stories to share with anyone willing to stop and listen. And between all that, you can climb aboard the rides after dark for another helping of thrills.

For friends or couples who love a good scare, this is a Halloween outing worth travelling for. Get your event tickets booked, arrange an overnight stay if you’re making a weekend of it, and choose a hire vehicle with room for everyone. Half the fun will be comparing reactions afterwards — and reminding the self-appointed brave one exactly how loudly they screamed!

Make room for a Halloween adventure!

The best Halloween plans don’t have to stop at your nearest city. With a Saturday Halloween to work with, there’s time to head somewhere new, explore a few local legends and turn a night out into a weekend you’ll still be talking about in November.
