Can I still rent a van with points on my license?

And to be honest: the answer depends. Different providers have different rules, but we all have to abide by the same legal restrictions, so there is some overlap. In general, it’s easiest to hire a van or car without any points on your licence, but if you do have some, you might still be able to do it. Here’s more about it all, and how we can help.

Hiring a van with points on your license

Many vehicle hire services will allow you to rent a van with points on your license, but the amount they will allow will vary. For example, some hiring services may only allow three points before they refuse to hire out their vehicles, while others will permit up to six points, and in some cases even nine.

Here at Intack, you’ll be able to hire one of our vans as long as you have less than six points on your licence. It’s also worth noting that we do technically reserve the right to refuse to hire our vans to anyone if we have any reservations (for whatever reason). It’s very rare for this to ever happen, but it’s just a safety procedure to ensure the health and wellbeing of everyone involved.

We’re asked quite a lot of questions about license points and insurance, so just in case you’ve got any yourself, we’ve summed up some of the most frequent ones that we often hear from our customers.

How our insurance policy works

Like all vehicle hire companies, we’re covered by insurance which in turn insures the driver, and these rules are rigidly enforced. Because our insurance extends to our customers, we take care to assess all driving offences thoroughly before we rent out one of our vans.

One thing to note is that according to the terms of our insurance, we can rent out vans to customers with up to six points on their license, but only if those points have been given for speeding offences. Penalty points relating to any other offence such as dangerous driving or driving under the influence will result in an instant refusal.

Do you need insurance to rent our vans?

All of our vans come with some level of insurance – they have to, in order to be legally drivable. In most cases, that's third party insurance. You’ll also be given the opportunity to take a Collision Damage Waiver, which will lower your initial deposit.

What does excess insurance entail?

Excess insurance is designed to cover a certain amount of excess in the event that one of our vans is damaged or stolen when it’s out with one of our customers. This works much like normal car insurance, in which you agree to pay a certain amount in the event to cover the costs of repair or replacement, while the insurance payout takes care of the rest.

It’s worth noting that we offer a Loss Damage Waiver, which will bring your excess to just £95 - that’s down from £1000. We should mention that our Luton Box Vans are an exception to this rule however, they have an insurance excess of £1500 – reduced to £250 if you purchase the waiver – so it’s well worth it for peace of mind when you’re out on the roads.

Can I use my own insurance?

If you did want to take a van out on your own fully comprehensive insurance, we do offer a discount on the service for that. Now, many personal insurance policies do not cover this, so it’s worth double checking. If you can be certain that yours does, however, please email a copy of your insurance to our team before you pick up your van, and we can provide you with a discounted fee.
